Palmer Energy Technology’s Scope

Commercially Focused Solution

Palmer Energy Technology partnered with First Bus to deliver a front-of-the-meter Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) at Hoeford Bus Depot. The project was designed to unlock commercial value from energy storage while strengthening the groups sustainability initiatives.

Palmer Energy Technology was responsible for the supply, installation support, and commissioning of critical electrical infrastructure, including:

  • 2.1 MWh / 1.1 MW Palmer Giga BESS

  • 1.25 MVA, 11kV close coupled transformer incorporating LV and      HV switchgear.

  • Installation support to ensure safe and efficient on-site delivery

  • Commissioning and testing of all supplied equipment

  • Close collaboration with First Bus’s system optimiser to enable effective commercial and operational system integration

The front-of-the-meter BESS was configured to connect directly to the 11 kV distribution network, providing First Bus with a flexible energy asset capable of supporting grid services and future energy optimisation strategies.


Palmer Energy Technology worked closely with First Bus and their system optimiser to ensure the BESS was fully integrated into the site’s energy management and optimisation systems. This enabled the asset to be operated in a commercially intelligent manner, maximising value while maintaining system reliability and compliance.


The inclusion of a close coupled 1.25 MVA step-up transformer ensured efficient grid connection and minimised system complexity by providing a containerised solution incorporating LV switchgear, transformer and HV switchgear.
