Palmer Energy Technology delivers Osprey Charging's first battery storage system

Palmer Energy Technology has partnered with Osprey Charging Network, one of the UK's largest rapid charge point operators, to install a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) at the Lamb & Flag charging site on the A40 near Abergavenny. It is the first site on Osprey's nationwide network to operate with an integrated battery.


Palmer's intelligent battery management system (BMS) and energy management system (EMS) will optimise the performance of the BESS in real time, maximising usable capacity and improving system efficiency. Osprey's proprietary software platform, Osprey Iris, will monitor and analyse battery and site performance, including energy input, output and associated costs, with the findings shaping BESS deployment across the wider Osprey estate.



The project brings together Osprey's years of experience operating one of the UK's largest EV charging networks with Palmer's deep technical expertise in battery storage systems.

Charging networks are increasingly integrating battery storage to complement grid connections as the cost of the standing and capacity charges attached to large grid connections continues to rise. ChargeUK reported in 2025 an average increase of 462% in fixed network charges across public chargers of all speeds, and at some ultra-rapid hubs energy costs have risen by thousands of per cent since the levy structure changed in 2021/22.


On-site battery storage addresses these pressures in three ways:


  1. It adds capacity and reduces the size of the grid connection chargers require, cutting operating costs without compromising power delivery to customers at peak times.

  2. It reduces reliance on local distribution networks at peak times, charging instead during periods of high renewable generation or lower prices.

  3. It enables the expansion of charging sites where demand is strong but grid capacity is limited, improving charger availability in rural areas in particular.

Performance data from the Abergavenny installation will guide the roll out of battery storage across the Osprey network, with Palmer providing ongoing technical support and analysis.
